I am a builder/designer in Northern New Mexico. For several years I had toyed with the idea of a tiny mountain get-away based on a single container. That idea came full circle and I am now tackling the design of a +-900 SF house that is 3-20' containers arranged in a U with a 20'x20' area being formed in the U which will be living room with utility and some storage near the back. Conceptually I want it to be fairly conventional to show that container housing can be and at the same time utilize as much of the containers features as possibe to bring the cost in below that of conventional construction methods. I have a tract of land under contract that has electricity but no water so harvesting and using a cistern are part of the design.
I am currently reviewing details of the International Residential Code as I intend to fully and properly permit this as a permanent dwelling--which it will be. So far it appears I can easily meet all space, energy and safety requirements and will basically be looking at exceptions to the prescriptive requirements that are geared toward frame and masonry construction that are not needed for the steel containers. I know architects and engineers in the area that I have worked with before and will probably need to employ one in order to obtain permits but would prefer to find one licensed in New Mexico who already has an interest in the concept of using containers for housing.
If there are any out there who have an interst in talking to me or if any of the rest of you readers know one you would suggest I contact--let me hear from you. |
