I have been reviewing the IRC 2003 for one and two family dwellings to see what obstacles there are to building with containers. I have found some requirements that will require special considerations but in most instances I can see a way to deal with them.
However, I have been looking for requirements that can't be easily met. One I have stumbled onto is the requirement for the floor joists to be galvanized. This is under Section R505 Steel Floor Framing. The code is written under the assumption that steel joists are of light thin gauge material and it doesn't differentiate in the listed standards for the thick wall steel that are used in containers.
It may be that code officials will not even pick up on such subtleties or make a logical decision. But, it is one of those requirements that I see no way to meet if they want to be hard nosed about it.
What have any of the rest of you seen that could be difficult code issues? |
