Redondo Beach House by DeMaria Design Associates has been incubating for some time. I was planning on posting info once the house was complete but the media are onto it now and so here is some info.

KCAL 9 Los Angeles news spot (video):
http://www.cbs2.com/video/?id=18957@kcbs.dayport.com

Local newspaper coverage: Daily Breeze (the South Bay area newspaper)
Link: http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/articles/2843756.html

I have on-site photos and other project info that I will post soon.

Hrmmmm,

That sure sounds like Tampa Armature Works did the container mods for them. David?

Now I wish I was going to the AIA (American Institute of Architects) Convention this year. It's being held in L.A. and I could have taken a trip to see the house.

Is there anyone in this group that lives near it that could take a few photos and post it on this forum?

I want to see the foundation, how the containers are connected, and how the windows are being framed for starters.

Thanks for posting it fabadmin!

Jennifer

I have lots of photos. I am back on site next Tues for more pics and then subsequently will be uploading a batch of various pics.

Also a couple of production companies have been filming during construction for packages that will run on cable and a major broadcast network.

Plenty more info to come on this project...

With Rancho Palos Verdes CA mere miles away right in the process of making private ownership of cargo containers a major felony and in addition to thier accidental forgetting that our container home was permitted by them in 1981. It was GREAT Having words like "First City" and "Trend setting" It was helpful to forward your articles to them and shame them! We want them to embracing our unique solutions instead of shunning us like blight. The harassment is periodic but direct. We get statements of Unsafe even though the calculations show we are extremely safe. We want to be the happiest place on earth but our city tries to make our lives more difficult than the land slide does.

If you get any more supporting documents please forward them!

If you want to see some of the "First" Homes on containers in the southland please come visit our homes in Portuguese Bend.

CNN ran a clip featuring Redondo beach House on Monday.
Let's see how this link goes (you might need to disable your pop-up blocker...)

The CNN story is little more than a combination of a stories about the container storage problem in Willmington, CA. that ran in the LA Times and the Redondo house articles that ran in the Times and the Daily Breeze newspaper, a local daily in the Redondo-Manhattan-Hermosa Beach areas.

It's great that the concept is getting some attention from the national media, but I wish they'd be a little more original and take a closer look at the concept of container housing as a solution to a problem that goes way beyond ugly container storage yards.

I guess my main criticism of the story is that if fails to address the high-tech visual appeal, the strength and the creativity of the whole concept. This is a story that deserves a stronger treatment that goes beyond the "problem" of containers to introduce the advantages that they offer.

I've put together a 20 page paper (PDF) on container houses that I would be happy to send to any one who is interested (must have broadband). Please excuse the plagiarized photos. It's nothing new, but there are some house designs that take a little different direction than the Redondo house. Just send me an email and I'll get it to you...
