Regarding the industrial aesthetic, I agree with Michael that it is a niche market.
It reminds me years ago when I was looking at purchasing a co-op in an edgey area of LA. When I described the place in glowing descriptive terms, my friend simply responded using my own words, "Do you really want to live in slightly spooky film noir set?" He was right.
What I have found is that people (my clients) respond to "cozy" Whatever connotation you want to apply to it, it all circles back to this word and more important, what that particular sense or feeling means to the client.
I see it time and time again. So if I were to suggest a "blade runner, armegedon" sort of theme to a client, well suffice to say they probably had padded plush carpet and a down sofa in mind!
But I do like the concept of that. If you are using containers as your basic building block I certainly believe that you need to see that component (honesty of materials). And that leads me to my next question. How do you insulate these containers and stop the cold bridge?
It seems to me that the exterior loses its graphic undulating skin or that the interior become very narrow with a very low ceiling. By doing this you lose the integrity of the structure in the progress. Any ideas? _________________ Kurt

Marilyn Manson concerts.
Seriously though, it probably takes a leap of faith by an entreprenerial developer to create some apocalyptic looking housing - and then the buyers will self select.
Where's a good place to build? A major city in an edgy/transitional area where there are some creative businesses (advertising, film production, publishing, design etc). Maybe it's a live/work setup. The idea would be to play up the "heavy metal" (literally) theme. Shipyard, steelworks etc
Maybe it's student rental housing near a design school. You can be the apocalyptic landlord. There are kids who would go for it if it is merchandised the right way. Definitely a niche but an interesting design exercise. http://www.marilynmanson.com/ |
